Overfitting Prevention

Published:

Overfitting prevention focuses on teaching a model to learn real patterns rather than memorizing every detail from the training set. A well-generalized model performs well on new data, not just the examples it has already seen. To achieve this, developers test performance on separate validation data and use techniques that discourage over-complex learning.

Common methods include:

  • Regularization, which penalizes overly large weights;
  • Dropout, which randomly removes parts of a network during training;
  • Early stopping, which halts training once performance stops improving.

Data augmentation is also used to create realistic variations of existing data, helping the model become more flexible.
