Autonomous Navigation

Published:

Autonomous navigation is the ability of a robot, drone, or self-driving vehicle to move from one location to another without human assistance. To do this, the system must understand what is around it and decide which route to follow. Perception systems help identify obstacles and important features. Mapping and localization methods estimate the robot’s place in the world. Planning algorithms choose paths that are safe and efficient.

As the robot moves, conditions change quickly, so the navigation system constantly updates its understanding of the surroundings. Control systems then adjust the robot’s movement to stay on course, correcting for things like drift or unexpected obstacles.
