NLP Engineering

NLP engineering is the work of building AI systems that can understand and produce human language. It covers tasks like interpreting a user’s request, translating text, or generating a helpful response. A simple example is a support chatbot that needs to recognize whether someone is asking for a refund or reporting a bug, even if they phrase it in many different ways.

The hard part is that language depends heavily on context. The same phrase can mean different things depending on tone, situation, or what was said earlier. Modern NLP systems learn these patterns by training on large collections of text, often using transformer-based models. In real products, NLP engineering also includes making the system reliable and safe, handling edge cases, and designing the interaction so people can understand and trust the output.
